The Ion, like most of Echo’s rods and reels, is designed for the entry-level angler. This isn’t the reel with the most bells and whistles or the most durable design. The Ion is, however, functional, lightweight, and efficient on the water. This reel is an especially solid option for the novice freshwater angler who doesn’t need a sealed drag system or a ton of max drag strength. If you’re an intermediate or expert angler, I’d consider upgrading. If you’re just getting into the sport, however, this reel is a great option.
Entry-Level Design - The Ion reel is designed for the novice angler who values affordability and functionality. The reel features a large arbor for quick retrieval rates, a hybrid machined/cast design, and a maintenance-free drag system with low start-up inertia. This reel is the perfect combination of affordability and performance.
Anodized Finish - The Ion sports an anodized finish that adds durability and corrosion-resistance to the reel. The finishing is great for excursions in both freshwater and saltwater and protects the reel when it’s dropped or dinged.
Hybrid Machined/Cast Construction - The Ion features a hybrid cast/machined construction. The benefit of a hybrid design is increased durability without a higher price-point. The reel utilizes aluminum alloy and other durable materials for performance that doesn’t break the bank.
Type - The Ion features a maintenance-free disc drag with a simplistic design and a strong, smooth braking mechanism. The drag has low start-up resistance and is perfect for the freshwater or light saltwater angler.
Materials - The drag is made with stainless steel components and a composite called Rulon (basically plastic). These materials create a drag that’s usable, efficient, and affordable. That being said, this isn’t the most durable drag on the market.
Large Arbor - The large arbor of the Ion increases line pickup and helps anglers fight the largest fish in both freshwater and saltwater. Most contemporary fly reels are made with a large arbor design to allow anglers to pick up as much line as possible with as little work as possible.
12 Month Limited Warranty - As of January 2020, the Ion falls under Echo’s one-year limited warranty. The warranty covers manufacturer defects in the reel for the limited time of one year after the original purchase from an authorized dealer. The Ion’s warranty is limited because of the reel’s low price-point.
