Run-off? We have options!
Even though the Gunnison is finally in run-off we have options to keep you on the water. First I will start by saying, you can fish in run-off! Personally I like fishing a heavy euro rig focusing on the edges and any pocket water or eddies I can safely reach. This is where the fish will be, as they do not want to fight the current anymore than I do. Call me for some suggestions.
Secondly, we have a marvelous Gold Medal tail water in the Taylor river! The flow are up a tad given the increased release from Taylor reservoir, but, these will be lowered as time goes on. Either way, the river stays clear for the most part and always fishes well.
So, what does the future hold? If I could tell you that we'd all have winning lotto tickets. As far as our historical runoff goes we are currently about 1500cfs lower than we were this time last year and given the dismal amount of snowpack, I would venture to guess things will be getting back to normal around the week of Father's Day. That is a straight up guess given the fact we have been getting some strong evening rains up high and that could make me a huge liar. I have a call in to mother nature, for some reason she never returns my calls.
So, bugs! Bigger on the Gunny and find that soft water along the edges, eddies and pocket water. DO NOT KILL YOUSELF trying to wade to them. So, favorites around here for bigger dirty water include: Thin mint buggers, Pat's RL, SJ worms, larger stonefly patterns like Prince nymph's and Pheasant tails.
The Taylor will fish well with most small midges and emergers. Perdigon patterns like the Frenchie in natural and black with a green collar are good as well. As always you can contact us and see if anything else has been productive.
Tight lines, wade safe and leave no trace!!
