Gunnison River Mid-August update!

Lake Fork Rainbow.

The Gunnison continues to fish very well!  Lately streamers have been producing  nice browns. White in the morning, yellow in the afternoon and olive toward the evening.  Blow torch or flamethrower patters are working nicely as well as JuJu Baetis.  There still seems to be a large concentration of rainbows closer to Blue Mesa Reservoir.  One client reported catching trout on a Texas rigged crawdad close to the lake. Lol  That's a first for me but whatever works!!  Hopper droppers are always a good option this time of year, plopped close to the bank on those sunny days.  Pat's RL and SJ worms are still producing, especially after it rains and the water is stained.

Green Drakes are still making an occasional appearance on the upper Taylor, there was even report of them working on the reservoir.  Other than that, midges and emergers are on the menu along with small streamers on cloudy afternoons.

I had a chance to fish the Lake fork above Red Bridge CG this past week.  As I wet waded in shorts, 2" black stoneflies made their way up my legs for a very creepy feeling.  I was have good success on a brown Spanish bullet with a JuJu above it, so I didn't bother switching to a Pat's RL although that would have been a great choice.

Afternoon rains have kept us in good, cool water for the time being.  As always, keep a thermometer handy this time of year and keep a close eye on hot afternoon temps, especially on the smaller creeks.

Spring creek road is closed between MM 4.5-6, up from Harmel's resort so keep that in mind.

Swing by for the latest updates and shop the largest fly selection in the valley! We have all your saltwater needs as well.  Please call if you have any questions.  We have the lines and hollow core backing to get you ready for anything, from the jungles to the Caribbean!   I can weave a knotless loop into your backing, this keeps it running smooth through your guides! Or I can thread your fly line directly into your backing if you don't plan on quick line changes.

Until next time, get those fall trips booked, the browns are already getting amped up and snow has already fallen in the Colorado high country!!
